One of my most frustrating issues within the world of cosmetics is the lack of a nude colour for women of colour. Traditionally, a nude colour is a pastel, dusky pink colour. It is normally described as flesh-toned. This is obviously the case if you have caucasian skin, however, this particular ‘nude’ isn’t universally appropriate for all skin types. What nude is and what it is sold as are two completely different things. Nude should be a neutral tone lipstick. An understated hue for a natural look and close to your skin tone. Given the lack of products available, I went on the hunt for one to see what I could find.
My current staple when it came to finding a flesh tone natural lip colour was a blend of pink nudes and brown lip pencils. This combination was a concoction which required the right ratios of each product to reach the perfect colour. Understandably, when in a hurry I couldn’t always achieve the same colour all the time. More recently I found Touch by M.A.C, which was a great find but still required some tweaking.
Whilst this was amazing, it wasn’t the perfect solution. I recently bumped into something that has proven to be the perfect answer to my nude lips dilemma…
The NYX Liquid Lingeries….
This line of matte lipsticks comes in a variety of 12 colours and the full range is as seen below.
As you’ll already know, I have stock piles of lip products, so I focused my attention on acquiring the nude tones from their collection. I wasn’t able to see these in stores, so I relied on the product photos and images to gauge which colours would be ideal. After all my research, I decided on two colours, Beauty Mark & Velvet Teddy.
Here are some swatches of my products.
NYX Liquid Lingerie – £6.50
The lipsticks come with an applicator which definitely makes it easier to apply the products on your lips more precisely without going over your natural lip outline. The lipstick dries matte, without starving your lips of any moisture whatsoever. It still remains soft and allowing you to drink and eat with minimal transfer. It is always best to try and moisturise before any mattifying products be they on your lips or your face. I would still recommend this regardless for this product.
Whilst these two products look very similar in appearing in the packaging, these are completely different colours. Beauty Mark is a true brown colour and is a perfect nude colour. (I use MAC Matchmaster 8.5 for your reference) I don’t have to tweak this in the slightest. I just apply and I’m out of the door. I do not spend hours concocting a nude anymore. Velvet Teddy is a light brown with a peachy undertone. It is a pretty colour and is one I wear when I want to switch up the nude look. I tend to add a brown lip liner to this so it does not look ashy.
Both are very pretty neutral lip colours for women of colour and definitely worth purchasing.
It’s been a quiet couple of days on my blog as I have been caught up with work and life, but I thought I would make an appearance.
