Meet Deshauna Barber, a lady who was up until a couple of days ago unknown to the majority of the world. Deshauna became crowned Miss USA 2016. In her day-to day life, the 26 year old female is an IT Analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce. She graduated from the Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management.
Born in Columbus, Georgia. to a now a retired Army Master Sergeant it fell naturally that she decided to also join the Army. She is an army reserve and is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland.
Deshauna has a passion to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, specifically focusing her platform on PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployments and suicide prevention in the Armed Force.
Based upon her resume, anyone would think that being a beauty pageant contestant and competing for something like Miss USA would be out of character for someone like Deshauna. She is a great example of thinking out of the box and being a go-getter for all the things you are passionate about. She epitomises the idea of blushing, by fulfilling all her dreams and not trying to fulfil a publicly accepted stereotype.
She changed the public’s perception of beauty pageants, as this sector tends to have an industry accepted ‘type’ of winner. This grabbed the attention of newspapers and the whole internet. It is wonderful to see how major beauty competitions and a platform as prominent as Miss USA is able to begin to truly represent the varying and diverse forms of beauty that exist.
She is an inspiration and a role model not just for black females but for those who cast certain things as unattainable because of stereotypes. She also showed how self discipline and self belief are most definitely necessary to reach your goals and that with hard work results are actualised. With hard work anything is possible.
